Single Parent Families Affected By Poverty

It has been reported that an astronomical number of children living in a single parent family are affected by poverty. The exact number of is debatable but it can be estimated that at least 4.1 million single mothers are currently living below the poverty line. This is a significant change the landscape of the family in the United States. It has changed in a rather quick manner as well. If you go back just a short twenty years there were a lot fewer people who were living in poverty and the breakdown of the nuclear family is to blame. It seems like a simple cause but there is no disputing the facts and figures of this tragedy.

Where the families have gone

It then has to be wondered where all of the families have gone, because there seem to be plenty of couples available to create children. However the responsibility of raising children and providing a life of guidance has been abandoned. Women are being impregnated and then they are left behind either by circumstances or choice.

Our culture provides more of a selfish attitude that people have, where it is all about their experience and if they are not happy then there is no sacrifice that can be made for someone else, including a child. This allows men with the thought that leaving a child to figure life out on their own is going to be ok. Where twenty or thirty years ago, that life of the child took precedence and the life of the parent was secondary. It only makes sense that two parents contributing resources is going to be more effective than one struggling by themselves. Not only is income the singularly most important thing, it is the chance to cover day care, allow for personal growth and move the family into a slightly nicer area.

Poverty drags down the next generation and those children without a two parent model to live with, are going to have a good chance of repeating the same mistakes that their parents made. The cycle continues and more and more children living in single parent homes are going to be living in poverty. This cycle can be broken when people start to accept their responsibility for the birth and care of their children. Being a parent is a commitment that needs to be taken seriously so that all of the kids know that they are cared for. Being rich doesn’t necessarily mean that kids will be healthier and happier but it will mean that they have the basics on a regular basis of food, shelter and clothing.
