Editing The Essay Can Be Quite Interesting

It’s sad that so many students struggle with essay writing and editing, but there just isn’t enough emphasis on the type of reading and writing for fun in the classroom that students would like to do. Reading classics like Romeo and Juliet is great, but doesn’t hold the interest of all teenage boys and girls. Despite some lacking features of public education, you can still prepare yourself and find better ways to be able to write your essays, whether they are for high school or college level.

Since it’s not the most fun activity to have to edit your essay, there are some ways you can make it easier on yourself. Think of some of these ideas to do while you work on your essay:

  • Is there a favorite spot in your house or neighborhood that’s quiet and a good environment for working in? Go there. Even a public library will do.
  • Do you have a favorite snack? Bring some apple slices or trail mix (as I am eating right now as I type this), or something else that’s relatively healthy to munch on while you work.
  • Make sure you bring all your materials with you. Do you like typing on a computer or writing on paper better? Bring your laptop and/or notebook. Also have a printed copy of your instructions and source references.

Writing your essay is sometimes seen as the hardest part, but it’s actually the editing where you really transform your essay into something beautiful. Even the roughest draft can be edited into a great essay, and you do have to have that rough draft done first, but the editing is where you really need to do your best work.

When you have an environment more conducive to good work, you’ll be able to get a lot more done faster and more efficiently. Editing can take time, but it’s worth your time to spend on it. There are a few ways you can begin your editing process. Most people simply reread their essays front to back and solve any obvious errors they see. But after that, it can be trickier to know what to do.

Other than just looking at spelling and grammar, also try reading for sentence structure. Keeping your sentences shorter and clearer can greatly help with your readability, which means that your teacher will be able to better understand what you’re trying to say.
