Commercialization of Sex and Sexuality

Modern society has become accustomed to selling products and services with the help of sexually related preferences and elements. In many cases, women are seen as sex objects in music videos, clothing ads, food products and more. Even teens are seeing advertisements catered to them that have hints of sexuality in them that make it seem as if being sexy is cool and trendy. While it is obvious the old saying of “sex sells” is true, how exactly does it sell?

Makeup products to junk food have used sexuality to help it sell. Clothing, jewelry and a wide selection of services also use some form of sex to help sell products. Some say it is a creative way of getting in touch with the younger generation or a way to get people fixed on a product long enough to gain attention to sell it. Sexuality may have a celebrity touch to it making such products and services more irresistible to the public. There are consumers that are not bothered by the whole selling of sex idea, while others feel it is a form of exploitation that is not being a positive role model for youth and young adults.

For those that find it a problem may have a few points of their own to argue. Commercialization of sex gives the impression that you have to look a certain way in order to enjoy a product or have a certain amount of money. It often gives the perception that it is acceptable to dress provocatively in order to get attention or a certain product or service. Many marketing campaigns seem to have some sort of sex appeal to help sell their products. Consumers often find it appalling but because big profits follow, many have nothing left to do but deal with it when protesting goes nowhere.

You would think most companies have ideas that would not involve promoting or selling a product with a sexual appeal. Nowadays it is difficult to not look at some form of media advertising and see a product or service being promoted with an individual that looks visually appealing. It is understandable profits need to be made in order to maintain your business, but the idea of using sex to sell content has gotten out of hand. Some companies make promotion attempts look desperate when they need to resort to doing something with a sex appeal.
