How to Write an Essay: Format and Presentation

In regards to the format and presentation of your essay, it is important to note that not all presentation and forms all the same. This largely is dependant what you are writing about and what kind of essay you are working on. For instance, a scientific journal is far different stylistically than a persuasive piece. To best know what form and presentation is best suited for you, consider what the objectives of your essay are and go from there.

Basic Guidelines

Though essay formats are not like cookie cutter standards that are the same all across the board, there are certain classic formats to fall back on when you are looking for a standardized writing format. One of these classic ways to write a basic essay is the 3.5 rule. The 3.5 rule refers to the format of having 5 paragraphs with 3 points. The five paragraphs of course include the introduction and the conclusion. The three paragraphs in between should be three separate points that are organized in a relevant way. This is the standard for writing essays, but is certainly not the rule.

There are three essential things to include in your essay, however, no matter which format you choose. That is the opening, closing, and the thesis. Make sure that all of these are consistent with one another for clarity and consistent purposes. If you find that they do not match up well, revise each portion of the essay until they are lined up. Some advise to write these sections first, as the rest of the essay will fall into subsections of these guidelines.

When you present your essay when it is due, specifically in the cases when it will be turned into a professor, presentation is extremely important. Make sure to be including a cover page with the title of your essay at the top, your name, and the professor’s name at the bottom. This should be the only thing written on the cover page. Within the essay, there should be a header with your last time and page number that is allotted to each page. At the last page should be the full bibliography that is in alphabetical order with all of your sources. Having each of these attributes within your essay presentation is standard for academic writers, but also makes the job of your professor easier when having your essay easily organized and presentable.
